Official: Matej Petrík joins Royals Vienna
The defending champions have added the biggest name of the autumn to the middle of their lineup. Linz Steel Wolves centre Matej Petrík has signed with Royals Vienna through the 2027/28 season and will wear No. 68 in Vienna.
VIENNA – The transfer bombshell of the autumn is confirmed. Royals Vienna announced on Friday morning that they have signed Slovak centre Matej Petrík from the Linz Steel Wolves. The playmaker has agreed to a contract running through the 2027/28 season and will wear No. 68 at Donau Arena, the number he carried in Linz.
The Royals paid a transfer fee that neither club disclosed. The deal also gives Linz a first-refusal option on one young Royals forward, which the Steel Wolves may exercise in the summer of 2027.
Linz's top scorer changes jerseys
Petrík arrives in form. He has dressed for all 14 of Linz's games this season, and with 4 goals and 16 assists for 20 points he was the Steel Wolves' leading scorer, fourth in the league scoring race and second in assists.
Born in Bratislava, Petrík came to Austria in 2024 after four seasons in his home country and needed no time to adjust: 46 points in his first ATHL season, then a career-high 57 (21 goals, 36 assists) last year, when he was voted to the league's All-Star team. His calling card is the first touch and the pass through the neutral zone that opens the ice for his wingers.
"We were looking for a centre who can speed up the transition through the neutral zone and deliver the puck at the right moment. Matej does that better than anyone in this league. We are not going to change him; we want him to play his game," said Royals head coach Markus Reitbauer.
"Linz will always be home"
Petrík admitted the decision was not an easy one.
"Linz will always be home for me. I leave with enormous gratitude to the fans and the club. But I want to play for a title. The Royals are defending it, and I want to be part of the team with the highest ambitions. When the offer came, I didn't hesitate for long," said the new No. 68.
Linz sporting director Stefan Hörmann called the move a deal that makes sense for both sides: "Matej wanted this transfer, and we could not afford to lose him for nothing in a year. We received funds that go straight back into the roster, plus an option on a talented young player. It hurts, but it is the right step."
Where does Reitbauer play him?
The Royals went into the season with the deepest roster in the league, but they lacked a true distributor in the middle. Petrík is expected to centre the top line between Marcel Kofler and Yannick Jäger, which moves Joey Ramsey to the second line, and he is also pencilled in on the right circle of the first power-play unit.
After 14 rounds, the Royals lead the standings with 32 points, three clear of the Dornbirn Lynx. The league's stingiest defence (22 goals against) and a nine-game winning streak to open the season carried them there, but the attack has produced only 38 goals, ninth-best in the league, and the Royals have won only one of their last five games, Sunday's 1-0 overtime loss in the Classic in Graz being the latest reminder.

Debut on Sunday?
The paperwork was completed on Thursday evening, and Petrík skated with his new teammates for the first time on Friday morning. Tonight at 19:00 the Royals host the Salzburg Ice Barons at Donau Arena, and Reitbauer did not rule out an immediate debut: "If he feels ready, he plays. We will decide after warm-up."
The more likely date is Sunday, November 1, when the Royals host, of all teams, the Linz Steel Wolves at Donau Arena. The schedule could hardly have scripted it better: Petrík may face his former teammates in only his second game in purple. The Royals won the first meeting of the season 2-1 in Linz on September 25.
The view from Linz
The mood in Linz is subdued. Steel Wolves head coach Mika Lehtonen admitted the team is losing its leader: "Matej was our engine on the power play and in the dressing room. Someone has to take over his minutes, and that is an opportunity for the younger guys. We won't feel sorry for ourselves; we play again tonight."
Linz, sixth with 22 points, have won two in a row. The first candidates for the vacant spot on the top line are Edoardo Bruno and 22-year-old Leon Fink, and tonight's visit of the Klagenfurt Dragons will show quickly how big the hole is.
This story will be updated after tonight's games.
